Teens spend countless hours on their cell phones and other devices seven days a week. Some of the negative health effects include sleep disruption, restlessness, and fatigue, as well as neck and back pain from constantly slouching over their cell phone. Martial arts is an excellent way to instill a healthy sense of balance into your teen’s life, get them to “unplug” from texting, swiping and scrolling on their devices and interact with people face-to-face. Martial arts greatly improves social, communications and people skills, which are necessary qualities for success in life.

a FUN outlet FOR TEENS to Find Their Passion.

Some teens have trouble finding something they're passionate about. For others, it's easy and natural. But there are some adolescents who just haven't found the right activity yet... and they seem a bit "lost" or maybe like they don't care. Martial arts gives teens the opportunity to explore who they are in a safe environment so they can find out what they like and what their good at. It’s a great way for teens to be creative and to express themselves in healthy ways with their peers. And… it’s just plain FUN!

It’s never easy hearing your teen talk about being picked on by a bully. You want to feel assured that they are safe at school, not on edge worrying about their wellbeing every day. Unfortunately, every school has a bully of some sort. Martial arts gives teens the courage and confidence to use the self-defense skills they’ve learned in a way that stuns the bully and causes them to back down and never pick on your child again. How’s that for peace of mind for both you and your teen?!

While many parents have smart teens, these same adolescents often have a hard time focusing and getting their work done. As a result, their grades suffer followed by their self-esteem plummeting, too. Oftentimes, it’s a vicious cycle. Martial arts is an invaluable activity that helps teens to pay attention to the instructor, focus on performing the techniques properly and hone their skills in every class. In short order, they develop good work habits that carry over into their studies at home, school and wherever they go.

Frequently Asked Questions

A: Not at all! In fact, martial arts makes teens calmer, happier, peaceful, more respectful and accepting of themselves and others. Martial arts has always been about peace, and it always will be.
A: As a parent, I'm sure you've seen that teens can get injured doing just about anything. Martial Arts is no different; however, we take safety very seriously here. Yes, injuries do happen sometimes. But we do everything in our power to avoid them. We do special warm-up exercises and stretches to make sure their body is limber and flexible.
A: Absolutely! Martial Arts teaches teens to be strong, coordinated, and flexible. Teens who don't have these qualities naturally develop them' and those who do grow them even more. Martial arts is often a 'home' for teens who don't excel at team sports. Kids who have trouble in baseball, basketball, soccer, etc. often come to martial arts and do extremely well.
A: You bet they are! We're dealing with teens here and if it's not fun, they won't want any part of it. We do a variety of fun drills and activities that challenge students and keep them interested and smiling with pride. We work hard here, but we also play hard.

My son (7) started this class several months ago. He absolutely loves it! Just in this short time he has noticeably grown so much from it. His focus is so much better, he doesn't shy away from speaking up as much as he used to, he doesn't hide behind me when meeting new people, he's more respectful and he stands up for himself more. It's also easier to get him to make better choices. He is proud of his karate experience and I'm so proud of him. It's also fantastic exercise, these kids do not stop moving the moment class starts. I love watching him participate. This has been the best investment! Master Fisher has been a great role model and we are so happy to have found this studio.

OKI is an amazing place, where martial arts knowledge combines with a fun and engaging atmosphere. Master Fisher is such an amazing teacher; my 8 yo has been going for a few years and has grown so much in both his skills and his self-discipline. My son enjoys karate, and Master Fisher is an awesome example for him. He says, “Karate makes me feel good!” The flexibility of attending classes throughout a week is a bonus too with a busy family. And there are many fun events throughout the year. Absolutely the BEST karate school in the area!!

Oxford Karate Institute is a great place to introduce martial arts into your child’s life. Master Fisher does an amazing job working with all ages from 4 yrs old to adults. My son has spent a year in the school and has learned so much. A lot of the life lessons we teach our son are echoed in his Karate classes by Master Fisher. Joining Oxford Karate has been a positive experience in our household.
